How to read a chart: candles and timeframes

Click an underlined word to see what it means.

A chart is nothing scary. It is just a picture of how the price moved. Every is one little box that tells you 4 things: where price started, where it ended, how high it went and how low.

A green candle means the price went up. A red one means it went down. The thin lines above and below are called the .

📊 One candle, explained

highest priceclose (end)open (start)lowest price
  • Green: the end is higher than the start
  • Red: the end is lower than the start
  • ⏱ 5-minute timeframe = every candle is 5 minutes

Timeframe

You can look at the same chart from far away or up close. You choose that with the :

  • 1 day: one candle is a whole day. You see the big trend.
  • 1 hour: you see what is happening this week.
  • 5 minutes: you see the details for entering a trade.

Beginners love to watch only the 1-minute chart and get lost in the noise. Always look at the bigger timeframe (day, hour) first, then the smaller one.

What a candle tells you about people

A big green candle without wicks means buyers were winning the whole time. A small candle with long wicks means buyers and sellers couldn't agree. Once you see that at a glance, you're halfway to reading charts.

✅ Quick check

A candle is red and has a long wick at the bottom. What happened?
